Cal MacLamond is the quintessential Western lawman dispensing justice from horseback with the help of Judge Colt. It is 1870, and Cal patrols a huge area from the Pueblo of Los Angeles, which is only a small town with a few dirt streets, to the far reaches of the county in the Mojave Desert.I have lived in or near Los Angeles County most of my life and have visited the same locales Cal does, but in a car on freeways and roads. Cal travels treacherous trails on horseback.. As I read this story, I am taken back to 1870 when twenty mule teams hauled freight into Los Angeles; the only mode of travel is by stagecoach and horseback. This series greatest treasures are the descriptions and history of my home, Los Angeles County, California.
Amargosa Ambush is the second story in the series in which Cal travels through the Santa Clarita Valley, through the San Fernando Pass, past the decaying San Fernando Mission down into the Pueblo of Los Angeles to the Sheriff's office. We see Cal's encounters with the miners, railroad workers, wagoneers, bandits, robbers, mountain lions and grizzlies that prowl the county. And of course, Cal's dangerous romance with the woman he cannot forget or stay away from.
Once again a delightful read.

I did not care for this book. It was not well written, the hero to much like a super hero, and the plot was weak.
deputy Cal Maclamond and his partner are looking for the ones who sheltered two fugitives he dound and took down. Cal also has a young woman to see.
Nicely written western.
Lawman Cal MacLamond is on a mission to right wrongdoings in this Old West adventure - whether it's saving a tone-deaf Chinaman, keeping pretty senioritas safe, or dodging bullets in a shootout with desperate hombres. Only thing is, Cal's more than a little smitten with a lovely lady named Resi. Could it be that this sharp-shooting deputy has finally found true love? If so, what's her husband going to say?
Looking forward to the next adventure in this series and hoping there is a happy ending for this rose-toting cowboy.
