I’m falling.
Faster.
Further.
Deeper.
Sometimes you fall so hard you can’t get back up. My closest companions now are shame and loss. But a sliver of hope lies in the only person I have left in this world – the one who’s growing inside me.
Survival becomes living again because of my child, and the town where I begin anew. That’s where I meet the man who starts to melt the ice inside my heart.
As we get closer, reminders of my past become sharper. Clearer. To confront the pain, I have to discover what’s deep down inside me. Is there enough left there to become whole again, or am I too wounded to heal?

**Warning** This book has mature content that some readers may find troubling. It is intended for readers 18 and up.

Deep Down Lockhart Brothers Book 1 edition by Brenda Rothert Literature Fiction eBooks

Even though this romance dealt with deep issues, like single motherhood, rape, and incest, it felt shallow and lacking in subtlety. The heroine had something terrible happen to her, but after that, everything fell into her lap--a place to stay after her ordeal, a job and apartment when she moved, a surrogate family, a boyfriend worth having, and finally, to top it all off, a multi-million-dollar inheritance. The narrative kept saying how hard she worked as a single mom, but there wasn't much evidence of it--her son was an abnormally perfect and well-behaved child who never caused any trouble or disrupted the charmed events of the story. Even the heroine's desire to go back to school (accomplished in part by online classes) was barely dealt with, and the revelation that she always wanted to write felt hollow because there was no mention of it in the beginning, before the supposed dream was dashed by her inability to go to college.

Deep Down Lockhart Brothers Book 1 edition by Brenda Rothert Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I am usually a big fan of this author's work, but this one fell kind of flat for me. First of all, as a teacher myself, it is completely unethical to invite a student to live with you regardless of the reason. The responsibility of the teacher is to go through the appropriate channels to offer help, to offer help personally is just asking for trouble. Secondly, Ivy was not really a likeable character. Part of it maybe that she was withdrawn and therefore her development was not complete. The love between Ivy and Reed was not really believable and there were other parts of this story that were also a little on the far fetched side for me.
The first in the Lockhart Brothers series and a great way to start! Featuring Reed Lockhart, the brother who is finally back in Lovely after being left at the altar years before and Ivy, the determined yet hesitant waitress with a young son, who she'll do anything to protect.

I loved that the author gave us the complete story of Ivy's horrific past and the nature of her son's paternity. How she managed to survive her last months in high school as a pregnant teen, shunned by everyone around her and forced to deal with her alcoholic father. Finding the savior in her teacher April and discovering that there is good in the world in the form of a midwestern town named Lovely. As Reed makes his entrance, Ivy is now on solid ground, with a job she likes and a family in the form of diner owners Gene and Margie, whom she loves. It's the right time for Ivy and although she has some issues still deep within her, the slow burn that is her romance with Reed touched all the right spots for me.

Both Reed and Ivy have their issues that put off going for more than just a friendship but these two have a sweet chemistry that can't be denied. Reed is beyond tender and there is a subtle sexyness about him that even Ivy can't resist. Not to mention how easily he fits in with Ivy's 3 year old son Noah and how seamlessly he picks up his life back in Lovely with 3 of his 4 brothers and the very funny banter between the men.

Well worth your time. An easy-flowing read that I highly recommend.

4 solid stars!
I don’t remember how I got this book. Most likely I got this book because of the cover. I tend to do that, buy books with covers that I like or get them if I like the blurb. I don’t want to give you spoilers, but I see no way around it. Not with the feelings I have for this book. Have you ever read a book that knocked the breath out of you? A book that took an unexpected twist? When this book started it had me crying, but by the ending I was happy. It was a tornado of emotions. Pain, Sadness, a feeling of being lost. This book took me on a wild ride that was not ready for.

After reading the blurb and the first couple of pages. I assumed that got pregnant by her HS boyfriend. I thought that since she left and tried to start over, something bad happened to him. Maybe he died or denied that child was his and didn’t want anything to do with her. Hell, was I wrong. Ivy was a virgin, who planned on having sex with her bf on their prom night. But instead she was raped (won’t say who did it, spoilers). Her life changed that day, weeks later she learns she is pregnant and she is left with no friends. No one knows what really happened. Instead they assume that she cheated on her boyfriend. After graduations she moves away to start over, to a place where no one knows her or knows what happened.

This book is about a Survivor. It is about the heartache and trauma, Ivy must overcome. She has to fight against her inner demons. To get past the nightmares that haunt her sleepless nights. She has to learn how to do more than just survive, she has to learn to live again. She learns what it truly means to be loved.
Brenda Rotherham never disappoints, her books are always well written, with real characters that attach themselves to your mind and heart. Ivy and Reed were meant for each other, It's nice to see them fall in love and carry on a relationship like mature adults. The peripheral characters-April,Margie & Gene and all the other Lockharts are the kind of people you'd like to have as friends and really help to make this story honest. This story deals with some harsh real life issues but handles them honestly and with compassion .
